Daeryeonsa Temple Wontongbojeon Hall
대련사원통보전 · 大蓮寺圓通寶殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaeryeonsa Temple was founded in 656, the sixteenth year of King Uija of Baekje, by the eminent monks Uigak and Dochim. No record survives of its history during the Goryeo period, but records remain of repeated repairs and rebuilding during the Joseon period. The buildings within the temple grounds include Wontongbojeon Hall, along with a prayer hall (nojeon), a shrine to the mountain spirit (sansin-gak), and monks' quarters. The date Wontongbojeon Hall was first built is unknown. During repairs in 1975, a ridge-beam inscription (sangnyangmun) recording details of the building's construction and a wooden plaque reading 'Geungnakbojeon Hall' were discovered, revealing that the hall had been repaired in 1647, the twenty-fifth year of King Injo, and repaired once more after that. The plaque currently hanging on the hall reads 'Geungnakjeon Hall.' The hall measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, and has a gable roof (matbae), shaped like the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. The bracket sets (gongpo) that support and decorate the roof eaves are placed both above the columns and between them, in the dapo style, and wind-shields (pungpan) have been fitted to both gable ends.
