Seosansanseong Fortress stands on Seomteulbong Peak, a hill behind Seokchi-dong village about 6 km northwest of Gochang-eup. It was built to overlook low-lying ground below 20 m above sea level, with streams bordering it to the east, west and south. It is a tema-sik fortress (one that encircles the crown of a hill) built of natural stone, with the south wall made of comparatively small stones and the north wall of larger ones. The walls run about 266 m along the south, 142 m along the east and 322 m along the north, for a total circumference of 730 m, and stand roughly 3 m high. The Dongguk Yeoji, the Jeungbo Munheon Bigo and the Daedongjiji all record it under the name "Seosan Goseong" and state that it was built during the Three Kingdoms period, which suggests it dates from Baekje, although Unified Silla pottery has also been found within the fortress. Scattered around the fortress are the Jungnim-ri dolmens, along with Baekje-period stone-chamber tombs and a cluster of Goryeo tombs believed to be connected with it.
