Daeryeonsa Temple Three-story Stone Pagoda
대련사삼층석탑 · 大蓮寺三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaeryeonsa Temple was founded by the monk Docham in 656, the sixteenth year of King Uija of Baekje, to honour the soldiers who died fighting the allied forces of Silla and Tang. This stone pagoda, standing within the temple grounds, has a body raised on a two-tier platform (gidan). The lower platform is a single simple square slab of stone that doubles as the base stone. The upper surface of the upper platform carries a ledge to support the body stone of the first storey. At each storey, the corners of the body stones bear pillar-shaped carvings. The roof stones of the first and second storeys have steeply sloping faces, and their four corners curve up only gently; on the underside there are two tiers of eave supports on the first storey, three on the second, and again two on the third, and since none show wear, they appear to be later additions. At the top only the square stone that once supported the finial remains. The body of the pagoda now consists of four body stones and four roof stones, but the overall form looks unnatural, and because the third-storey roof stone is of a different material from the rest, the pagoda appears to have been altered at a later date. The tall support beneath the body stones and the thick treatment of the roof stones suggest the pagoda was erected in the Goryeo period, though no specific record of it survives.
