Seungjujoseunghun House
승주조승훈가옥 · 昇州趙昇勳 家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is the head house (jongga) of the Jeolmingong branch of the Okcheon Jo clan, said to have been built in 1676, the second year of King Sukjong of Joseon, by Jo Chi-hyeong (1642–1754). The village itself took shape when Jo Ji-gon of the Okcheon Jo clan first settled here about 550 years ago. Gamnakjae, built to foster harmony and affection among kin, still stands in the village, and Gwiduejeong and Gyeongungak are said to have once stood here too, though neither survives today. The house is made up of the main hall (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae), gate quarters (mungan-chae), a storehouse (gotgan), a memorial hall (jesil), a rear building (araechae) and a middle gate section (jungmungan); only the foundation stones remain where a raised gate (sotdaemun) once stood. The house holds a large collection of Joseon-period royal appointment documents (gyoji), yeongji orders, jeollyeong directives and old books, together with tableware, a chest for appointment documents and other everyday household articles, providing valuable material for understanding how life was lived here at the time.
