A budo is a stupa-like structure symbolising a monk's grave, in which the monk's remains or sari (relics) are enshrined. These two budo, standing about 70 m west of Cheonbuljeon Hall at Hyangcheonsa Temple, enshrine respectively the sari of the monk Uigak, who founded this temple at the end of the Baekje period, and the sari of the monk Myeorun, who gathered a monk militia and took part in the Battle of Geumsan during the Imjin War of Joseon. The budo seen on the left when facing the pair has, above a base stone, a platform (gidan) built in three stages — lower, middle and upper — topped with a rounded body stone and then a roof stone, the whole based on an octagonal plan. The lower platform stone has, at its eight corners and at the centre of each face, carvings of pillars resembling strings of beads, with patterns set between them, and its upper surface is ringed with a carved lotus pattern. The middle platform stone has pillars carved at its eight corners, and each face bears a carving of one of the guardian deities who protect the Buddhist Dharma. The upper platform stone is decorated with lotus carvings that mirror those of the lower platform. The upturned roof stone has rafters, as seen on ordinary houses, neatly carved on its underside, and each of its eight upper corners bears a beautifully carved projecting ornament. At the top, a roof-shaped finial rests on a round stone, itself carved for decoration. The budo on the right has, above a base stone, an octagonal platform supporting an elongated, bell-shaped body stone, topped with a roof stone. The platform has two tiers: the lower bears two recessed, frame-shaped carvings on each face, and the upper is ringed with a lotus pattern. The roof stone has rafters carved in relief on its underside, and each of its eight upper corners carries a splendid projecting carving. At the top, a bud-shaped finial sits on a low support stone.
