Cheongnyuam is a hermitage affiliated with Baegyangsa Temple, founded in 1350, the second year of King Chungjeong of Goryeo, by the State Preceptor Gageom. It is said to be named Cheongnyuam, meaning "hermitage of clear flow", because it likens the mind to clear, pure water and speaks of entering meditation (seon) with a clear and pure heart. From within the grounds of Baegyangsa Temple, crossing the valley to the left and climbing a steep mountain path for about 2 km brings one to Cheongnyuam, where the Gwaneumjeon Hall and a monks' quarters (yosachae) stand. The Gwaneumjeon Hall has large foundation stones set on a platform, carrying thick, round pillars. The bracket sets (gongpo) made to support the eaves of the roof are carved in the ikgong style, in the shape of a bird's wings, and the projecting ends of the bracket members are topped with lotus buds.
