Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building was erected to commemorate the virtue of No Su-sin (1515–1590), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. He passed the munkwa civil service examination in 1543, the thirty-eighth year of King Jungjong, and went on to hold posts including jeonjeok (registrar) and sasa (librarian) at Seonggyungwan, the state Confucian academy, but was dismissed from office during the Eulsa Purge and spent nineteen years in exile on Jindo Island. While there, he exchanged letters discussing scholarship with Yi Hwang and others, and in 1567 wrote annotated commentaries on works such as the Sukheung Yamaejam and the Daehak Janggu, building a reputation among the Confucian literati (sarim). When King Seonjo ascended the throne, he was reinstated and rose to the position of Yeonguijeong (Chief State Councillor). He excelled in poetry, prose, and calligraphy, studied Yangming Confucianism in depth, and maintained a friendship with the monk Hyujeong. Within the grounds of Ogyeonsa, a lecture hall stands at the foot of the mountain, while Ohyeon Yeonggak and Bulwicheonsadang stand higher up behind it. Bulwicheonsadang, which enshrines No Su-sin, is said to have been built by his son No Dae-hae, who served as magistrate of Yeongju, though the exact date is unknown. The lecture hall, a space for preparing memorial rites, is said to have been built together with Ohyeon Yeonggak in 1658, the ninth year of King Hyojong, by his great-grandson No Gyeong-myeong, who served as magistrate of Bonghwa. Bulwicheonsadang and Ohyeon Yeonggak are each buildings measuring three kan across the front and one kan along the side, with gable roofs (matbae) shaped like the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side, while the lecture hall measures five kan across the front and two kan along the side.
