Gallyang-ri Flagpole Supports
간량리당간지주 · 間良里幢竿支柱

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFlagpole supports (dangganjiju) are a pair of stone pillars that stand on either side of a danggan, a flagpole from which a Buddhist banner called a dang was hung. They were erected at the entrance to a temple; in rare cases the flagpole itself survives, but usually only the two supports remain. On the site where these supports stand, a temple called Ganyangsa is said to have stood from its founding in 598, during the reign of King Hye of Baekje, until about 150 years ago; today only the temple site remains. Owing to the long passage of time, only the pillars of the flagpole supports survive; the base stone that once held the flagpole in place between them has been lost. On the inner face of each pillar, holes were bored at two points, upper and lower, to secure the long flagpole and keep it from swaying.
