Baeko Village School
백호서당 · 栢湖書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis village school (seodang) was built to honour the legacy of Lee Hwi-il (1619–1672), pen name Jonjae, a leading figure of the Yeongnam School. Lee Hwi-il was a scholar of the late Joseon period. From an early age he studied Neo-Confucianism deeply, grasping its principles and forming an independent school within Neo-Confucian thought. He also valued ritual propriety, compiling the Sangje-daeyo and its detailed regulations to correct abuses that had become entrenched in everyday mourning customs. His writings include the Jonjaejip, the Guinnyak and the Hongbeomyeonui. Baeko Village School was built by local Confucian scholars in 1757, the 33rd year of King Yeongjo. Over the years it was repaired and renovated several times, and most recently, because of the construction of Imha Dam, it was relocated to its present site in 1989. The building is a two-storey pavilion set on a rock and facing south-east, four bays wide at the front and two and a half bays deep at the side. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled roof, shaped like the figure 八 (eight) when seen from the side. The bracket work supporting the eaves is decorated in the ikgong style, shaped like a bird's wing. The central two bays are floored, with heated ondol rooms on either side.
