Shophouse Ri Maitreya Buddha
상가리미륵불 · 上加里彌勒佛

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue, located in Deoksan-myeon, Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, takes the overall form of a stone pillar. It is commonly called the Maitreya Buddha, but judging from its form it clearly represents Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. On its head it wears an elaborate crown decorated with grass and flower patterns, with a small Buddha carved at the centre. The face is elongated, with plump flesh on both cheeks. The robe, which covers the left shoulder, is rendered in incised lines and flows naturally from the left shoulder across to the right. Both arms are kept close to the body: the right hand is raised to chest height, while the left hand rests palm-down on the abdomen. The style expressed in this statue was popular during the Goryeo period, and this type of statue is widely distributed throughout the Chungcheong region.
