O Stele Pavilion, Haman
함안 오비각 · 咸安 五備閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a jeongnyeo-gak, a commemorative pavilion built to publicise the filial conduct of Dokchon-gong Jo Jong-yeong. Jo Jong-yeong was a descendant of Master Eogye, one of the Saengyuksin ('the Six Surviving Loyal Subjects') from the reign of King Danjong of Joseon (r. 1452–1455); he was accomplished in both learning and conduct, and so devoted to his parents that his filial piety never wavered, whether they were alive or after they had died. When his filial conduct became widely known, the Hyogam Yuheobi stele was erected in his honour in 1892, the 29th year of Emperor Gojong, and in 1905, the 9th year of the Gwangmu era, this pavilion was built by royal order. It measures one bay at both the front and the side, and the roof is a hipped-and-gabled roof, shaped like the figure 八 (eight) when seen from the side. The bracket work supporting the eaves is in the dapo style, with brackets set both above the columns and between them, decorated with various motifs such as turtles and lotus flowers, giving it an ornate appearance.
