This stone lantern remains within Bodeoksa Temple, though almost half of it is now missing. A stone lantern generally centres on a hwasaseok, the fire chamber where the light is lit, with a three-tiered base below and a roof stone above; of this lantern, only the fire chamber, a single tier of the base, and the roof stone now survive. The octagonal fire chamber has windows cut into four of its faces to let the light shine out, while the remaining four faces are finely carved with images of the Four Heavenly Kings. The roof stone is so badly worn that its original form is difficult to make out, and a round stone rises at the top to form a finial. Bodeoksa Temple was founded in 1865, the second year of Emperor Gojong, in the late Joseon period, but judging from the carving technique, this stone lantern appears to have been erected considerably earlier than that.
