Goheung Namhwiru Pavilion
고흥남휘루 · 高興覽輝樓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGoheung Namhwiru Pavilion (覽輝樓) was the gate tower of the government office of Heungyang County in the Joseon period, standing in front of Yeongju-amun, the county office. Namhwiru is a two-storey gate tower from which a drum was struck to announce the opening and closing of the Heungyang county office. Its original name was "Namhwiru of Yeongju-amun." Namhwiru was a space where the magistrate governing Heungyang, other officials, and visiting guests gathered for leisure and social occasions. A pavilion attached to a county government office or guest house (客舍, where visiting officials and royal envoys were lodged) symbolised the achievements and development of an official's governance. Gate towers and fortress towers were spaces that displayed the dignity of government offices, among other things used to signal by drum the opening and closing of the office gates. As barely a dozen or so gate towers of government offices survive nationwide today, Namhwiru is valuable material for research into the architecture of Joseon-period government office gates.
