창녕 열효신씨 정려비 · 昌寧 烈孝辛氏 旌閭碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are two memorial steles erected to honour the loyalty, filial devotion and chastity of Sin Sa-cheon ( ? –1382), a civil official in the service of King Gongmin in the late Goryeo period, and his two daughters. According to the Goryeosa jeollyo (Essentials of Goryeo History), Sin Sa-cheon, who held the rank of Bongikdaebu and served as Jeon'gong Panseo (Minister of Works), gave up his official post and returned to his hometown. When Japanese invaders attacked repeatedly, he rose against them and won great merit, dying in 1382, the eighth year of King U. His elder daughter had married Kim U-hyeon, an officer holding the rank of nangjang, and lost her life fighting alongside her husband against the invaders; his younger daughter, still only sixteen, likewise died fighting them. When Jo Jun, who held the post of Jeonbeop Panseo, came to Gyeongsang-do province as chebokssa (a royal inspector sent to investigate local affairs), he heard this story and reported it to the king, who ordered steles to be erected and rewards granted, and had the story recorded in the Samgang haengsillok (Illustrated Conduct of the Three Bonds). Standing side by side within a single stele pavilion, the steles rest on low square pedestals with simply shaped stele bodies, and were erected in 1405, the fifth year of King Taejong of Joseon. In 1994 a new stele pavilion and shrine were built to house them.
