Goheung Sangnim-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda
고흥상림리삼층석탑 · 高興上林里三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda stands in the garden of the Pungyang-myeon office, having been moved here from a nearby hill. Originally only the entire platform and the three roof stones of the pagoda body survived, but in 1990 new body stones and a finial were made to restore it, giving it its present form of a three-story body raised on a single-story platform. An inscription carved into one side of the platform at the time the pagoda was erected survives, giving the exact date of its construction. The section of the platform's upper surface that supports the pagoda body bears a lotus design, though it feels somewhat perfunctory. Each of the three newly made body stones has pillar shapes carved at its four corners in imitation of the original. The very thin-looking roof stones have four tiers of supports on their undersides, and their eaves run straight across the middle before curving slightly upward at both ends. In a particularly unusual technique, a groove was cut beneath the eaves to break the flow of water and prevent moss from forming. The inscription on the platform shows that the pagoda was erected in 1021, the twelfth year of King Hyeonjong of Goryeo, making it valuable material for the study of stone pagoda styles of the period. (The three-story stone pagoda, formerly located in Sangnim-ri, Pungyang-myeon, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, was relocated to the Goheung Buncheong Culture Museum in 2017 for preservation.)
