A stupa is a structure enshrining the remains or sarira (relics) of a Buddhist monk, also called a seungtap. While pagodas usually stand within the temple grounds, stupas are normally erected outside the temple precincts. The Ansimsa Temple Stupa Group stands just behind the Iljumun, the temple's outer gate, and mainly enshrines the sarira of monks who practised at Ansimsa Temple between the 17th and 19th centuries. It includes bell-shaped stupas and round, ball-shaped stupas, the representative forms of the Joseon period, so that the variety of Joseon-era stupa styles can be seen here. The Ansimsa Temple Stupa Group was designated a Jeollabuk-do tangible cultural heritage in 1984 under the name "Ansimsa Ordination Platform and Stupa Group". After the Geumgang Gyedan Ordination Platform of Ansimsa Temple was raised to the status of treasure in 2005, the stupa group alone was redesignated as Jeollabuk-do cultural heritage material.
