Sonjeongsik Old House in Gyo-dong, Miryang
밀양 교동 손정식 고가 · 密陽 校洞 孫正植 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis old house stands in Seochon, west of Miryang Hyanggyo (a local Confucian school), and was built in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong's reign. Centred on the main women's quarters (anchae), an L-shaped men's quarters (sarangchae) and a storehouse wing are arranged to form a quadrangular courtyard layout. The middle gate wing is connected to the sarangchae, and all the spaces are linked around the inner courtyard; the outer gate wing is a recent addition. The anchae measures seven kan across the front and two kan deep — kan being the traditional unit of measurement between pillars — with a gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人. There is a narrow veranda bay at the front and a partial veranda bay at the rear. The entrance, where the kitchen has been extended and covered with a small eyebrow-shaped roof, is unusual. The sarangchae measures four kan across the front and two kan deep, also with a gable roof. Its four bays meet at a right angle to form an L shape, and a three-kan middle gate wing is connected to it in parallel. The rear veranda connects with the inner courtyard, and as the number of rooms increased, their functions became more differentiated.
