Temple Bell held at Okcheonsa Temple
옥천사 소장 범종 · 玉泉寺 所藏 梵鐘

This temple bell, cast in 1728, is a late-Joseon bronze bell fitted with a eumtong, the hollow sound-tube characteristic of Joseon bells. It shows a lively style in its yugwak panels and bodhisattva figures, and the bodhisattva holding a flower in particular is presumed to have been cast by a craftsman of the same lineage of monk bell-founders as Sain Bigu, the leading bell-caster of the Jeolla region in the late Joseon period. The surface of the bell is now coated in black lacquer, and parts of its inscription and decorative patterns have been somewhat worn away, but it remains a valuable record of a late-Joseon bell, since the date of its first casting (1623), the date of its recasting (1728), and the place where it was first enshrined (Yongsusa Temple on Yongdusan Mountain) are all clearly established.
