Standing Yeondongsa Temple Site Ksitigarbha
연동사지지장보살입상 · 煙洞寺址地藏菩薩立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone Buddhist statue, located in Geumseong-myeon, Damyang County, South Jeolla Province, is preserved together with a stone pagoda directly beneath a rock face about 20 metres high, south of Geumseongsanseong Fortress. The statue is carved from a square stone pillar, its front and back faces lightly dressed to depict the head, with the hands and stylised robe folds shown on the body. The head is shaven and the face broad and round. The robe draped over both shoulders is simply rendered, and a single fold of drapery hanging down over both arms is a distinctive feature. The sash knot decorating the area below the chest is realistically rendered, a style that continues from the Unified Silla period. The right hand is raised with the arm bent, the middle finger and thumb touching, while the left hand hangs down to an unnaturally long length out of proportion with the rest of the body. The lower part of the body is buried in the ground and cannot be examined in detail, but the head appears to be bowed slightly forward. While the head and face of this statue show realistic technique, the body is entirely out of proportion. In particular, features such as the hunched shoulders and the bowed head suggest that it was made in the late Goryeo period.
