Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site where Maeheon, Jeong Gi-ryong (1562–1622), a military official of the mid-Joseon period and the founding ancestor of the Gonyang Jeong clan, was born and spent his youth studying scholarship and training in the martial arts. Maeheon passed the military examination in 1586, the nineteenth year of King Seonjo's reign, and became a Bongsa, a junior military officer, at the Hullyeonwon, the Military Training Agency. When the Japanese invasions broke out in 1592, he won great victories against the Japanese forces in numerous battles, defending the Honam region. He subsequently held posts including Towae Daejang, commander for the suppression of the Japanese, and Military Commander of Gyeongsang Right Province, before rising to Samdo Sugun Tongjesa, Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Forces of the Three Provinces. He died in 1622, the fourteenth year of King Gwanghaegun's reign. Today, Gyeongchungsa Shrine has been maintained since 1932 to hold memorial rites honouring Maeheon's achievements, and in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province, there are a shrine dedicated to the general, his tomb, and a hall of relics.
