This is the stele of Namyeongun, father of Heungseon Daewongun. Namyeongun (d. 1822) was a son of Yi Byeong-won, a sixth-generation descendant of Prince Inpyeong, the third son of King Injo of Joseon; he was adopted as the son of Eunsingun, a half-brother of King Jeongjo, and was granted the title Namyeongun. After his death he was buried in the Deoksan area of Yesan, Chungcheong-do, but in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, his tomb was robbed by the German Ernst Oppert, an episode that further hardened Heungseon Daewongun's policy of national isolation. The stele standing in front of the tomb has its body set on a tall square base and topped with a roof stone; on its front face the stele's name, "Namyeongun Chungjeong", is carved horizontally. It was erected after Heungseon Daewongun's son succeeded King Cheoljong to the throne as Emperor Gojong, and its inscription was composed by the Chief State Councillor Jo Du-sun.
