An Hui-je Birthplace, Uiryeong
의령 안희제 생가 · 宜寧 安熙濟 生家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the birthplace of Baeksan An Hui-je (1885–1943). An Hui-je was an independence activist who worked to spread modern learning by founding schools such as Changnam School and Uisin School, and who also played a pioneering role in the nationalist press; he died at the age of fifty-nine. The birthplace consists of two buildings, the main house (anchae) and the detached men's quarters (sarangchae). The main house measures six kan — kan being the traditional unit of a bay between pillars — across the front and two kan on the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" when viewed from the side. From left to right it is arranged as a wooden-floored room, a room, a broad timber-floored hall (daecheong), a room, and a kitchen. The sarangchae is a four-kan thatched building set close against the main house. Both buildings face east, and unusually each has a one-kan wooden floor built along its south side. The house also shows a characteristic feature of late Joseon-period dwellings, in that rooms needing a variety of functions are accommodated within a single building rather than in separate structures.
