A Yeopyobi is a stele erected to mark a jeongnyeo, an honour conferred to commend the conduct and spirit of loyal subjects, filial sons, virtuous women and the like. This stele commemorates the filial devotion of Bak Yang-chun, a man of the Joseon period. When Bak Yang-chun (1561–1631) lost both his grandmother and his mother, whom he had served with the utmost devotion, during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98, he did not flee the fighting but wept and wailed loudly day and night. A Japanese general passing through the area was so moved by his filial devotion that he wrote the words "Chulcheonjihyo" (出天之孝, "a filial son sent by Heaven"), and this protected him from attack by Japanese soldiers; this is said to be the origin of the stele. The stele now stands within a walled pavilion.
