Jangheung Tapsansa Temple Epitaph Tablet Deung

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krClimbing about 1 km up from the site of Tapsansa Temple, one comes across this stone lantern. A stone lantern is generally centred on a hwasaseok, the fire chamber where the lamp was lit, set on a three-tiered base below and topped with a roof stone above; in this lantern, however, part of the base and the fire chamber are now missing. The surviving lower base stone, middle pillar and roof stone are all octagonal, and the upper surface of the lower base stone bears an eight-petalled lotus design. The upper surface of the roof stone forms a gentle slope, with the eaves line and the eight corner ridges tracing soft curves. It is presumed to have been erected in the early Goryeo period, and although roughly half of it is now missing, together with the Tapsansa Bronze Bell (a treasure), now moved to Daedunsa Temple in Haenam, it remains important material for the study of the Buddhist sculpture of the old Tapsansa Temple.
