This seodang (Confucian academy) was established by Confucian scholars and disciples to honour Gwak Jong-seok (pen name Myeonu). Gwak Jong-seok (1846–1919) was a Confucian scholar and independence activist who trained many younger students. In 1919, while drafting and sending the Confucian Petition addressed to the Paris Peace Conference, he was discovered by the Japanese police and imprisoned. This place, also known as I East and West Hall, was built in 1920, while its memorial shrine was built in 1919. The academy consists of a lecture hall, a study hall, and the memorial shrine. The lecture hall measures five kan across the front and one-and-a-half kan on the side, with a hip-and-gable roof. The study hall measures three kan across the front and two kan on the side, with a hipped roof that appears trapezoidal when viewed from the front. The memorial shrine measures three kan across the front and one-and-a-half kan on the side, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side.
