Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIt is not known exactly when the Gurim Daedonggye (Grand Village Compact of Gurim) began, but the Gurim Donggye Jeonmal Seogi, a record of the full history of the Gurim village compact written by Park Sa-ryang in 1706, the 32nd year of King Sukjong of Joseon, suggests that it was first established sometime between 1565, the 20th year of King Myeongjong, and 1580, the 13th year of King Seonjo. It was created with the intention of building an ideal community through the realisation of the spirit of hyangyak (a Confucian-based code of village conduct), but afterwards fell into decline because of the Japanese invasions of 1592–98. It was restored between 1609 and 1613, the first to fifth years of King Gwanghaegun, and restored again between 1641 and 1646, the 19th to 24th years of King Injo, continuing down to the present. As a dongyak (a village-level hyangyak compact) that has maintained its continuity, it is a leading example of such compacts in the Honam region, and is valued as important material for understanding the village compacts of the Joseon period.
