This seowon, a Confucian academy, was built to honour the integrity and loyalty of Nongeun Min An-bu. Min An-bu was a loyal subject of the late Goryeo period and one of the 72 Sages of Dumundong. Under King Gongyang of Goryeo (r. 1389–1392) he rose to the post of Minister of Rites, but when Joseon was founded he withdrew with the other 72 sages into Dumundong. He later came down to Daepo-ri in Saneum County, where he lived in seclusion, keeping faith with and remaining loyal to Goryeo. Daeposeowon was established in 1693, the 19th year of King Sukjong, but was closed under the order of Heungseon Daewongun abolishing seowon academies. It was later restored in 1874, the 11th year of King Gojong, when Confucian scholars and his descendants rebuilt Sungjeolsa Shrine, Sungjeje Hall, and the Dongjae and Seojae study halls.
