Songgyejae Hall, Sancheong

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a jaesil, an ancestral hall for ritual preparation, built near the grave of Min An-bu, a civil official of the late Goryeo period. While Min An-bu held the post of Minister of Rites, the fortunes of Goryeo began to decline amid turmoil: Yi Seong-gye withdrew his troops from Wihwado Island, and Choe Yeong and Jeong Mong-ju were removed in the course of the ensuing upheaval. Min An-bu abandoned his official post and, together with the 72 loyal subjects of Goryeo, entered Dumundong (present-day Gwangdeoksan Mountain, Gaepung County, Gyeonggi-do), where he resisted the founding of Joseon; narrowly escaping death, he withdrew to Sancheong County in Gyeongsangnam-do and lived there in seclusion. He spent the rest of his life there amid nature, and in keeping with his wishes his sons also refused to take office under Joseon. His descendants later flourished and became the founding ancestors of the Sancheong Min clan. A stream is said to have once run near the grave, but it no longer exists; the building standing today was rebuilt in 1839, the 5th year of King Heonjong.
