The site where Sachang Village School now stands was originally where Jeong Gu, whose pen name was Hangang, built a small study hall in 1591, the 24th year of King Seonjo, to teach Neo-Confucianism. Two hundred years later, in 1796, the 20th year of King Jeongjo, his disciples built a house on the site and named it Sachang Village School. Jeong Gu was a civil official and scholar of the mid-Joseon period. He devoted himself to scholarship rather than to officialdom, and after King Gwanghaegun's accession to the throne he took up local posts rather than central government positions, in order to promote learning in the provinces and to educate the people. Sachang Village School is situated facing south at the foot of a mountain within Ocheon Village. In front of the school stands a single-leaf gate that has recently been restored, and to the left of the entrance stands a memorial stele marking the site associated with Jeong Gu. The building is of solid construction, measuring five kan across the front and two kan in depth (a kan being the traditional unit of the bay between pillars). The roof is a matbae, or gable roof, forming the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. The front three kan have a wooden-plank floor, and each of the flanking kan has an ondol-heated room.
