Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBonggangjae is a jaesil, a ritual hall built to manage the tomb of Yun Sin-dal (893–973), founding ancestor of the Papyeong Yun clan. From childhood he excelled in both scholarship and martial arts, and as an adult he assisted Wang Geon in founding Goryeo, making great contributions to establishing the foundations of the new state. This building was erected in 1751, the 27th year of King Yeongjo, when Yun Gwang-so, a 28th-generation descendant of Yun Sin-dal, was serving as magistrate of Andong. In 1762, the 38th year of King Yeongjo, it was repaired by Yun Dong-do, a 26th-generation descendant, while he was serving as governor of Gyeongsang Province, and it was later enlarged and rebuilt by Yun Seong-dae, who had served as magistrate of Andong. The building measures six kan across the front and four kan in depth, with a paljak, or hip-and-gable, roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side. Overall it has an L-shaped floor plan, with excellent joinery in the shaping and fitting of its timbers, clearly reflecting the architectural style of the mid-Joseon period.
