This is a seowon (Confucian academy) founded by Jeong Bae-geol, the founding ancestor of the Chogye Jeong clan, in order to train the next generation of scholars. Jeong Bae-geol was a scholar of the early Goryeo period who came first in the civil service examination in 1017, the eighth year of King Hyeonjong, and devoted himself to teaching his disciples. The date when Ok Seal-script Calligraphy Temple, Hapcheon was first established is not known, but it was rebuilt in 1861, the twelfth year of King Cheoljong, and again in 1981, bringing it to its present form. The building has a front of four bays and a side of two bays; the central two bays form a wooden-floored hall, flanked on either side by ondol (heated-floor) rooms. The roof is a gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. Wind boards are fitted beneath the roof at both gable ends to block the wind.
