This is a stone-pillar-shaped sculpture of a type popular throughout South Chungcheong Province, standing 3.2m tall. The head and body show only slight modelling, giving an impression of simplicity and massiveness alone. The head appears to wear a jewelled crown, and the square face is schematic. The facial features are not clearly defined, the stone having worn badly, but they are rendered unusually small in proportion to the size of the face, so that the figure reads as a plain stone pillar. The right hand rests on the abdomen and the left arm is placed against the chest, the arms being notably small in proportion to the body. The cylindrical body shows almost no volume or carved form, to the point that the folds of the robe are difficult to make out. The sides and back of the body are not carved at all, a technique considered identical to that of stone-pillar-type Buddha images of the late Goryeo or early Joseon period.
