A sajeokbi is a stele recording facts or traces connected with a particular event or undertaking; records of a person's achievements are also, in a broad sense, counted among such steles. This stele records the achievements of An Suk, a military official of the late Joseon period. In 1797, the 21st year of King Jeongjo, An Suk became Military Commander of the Right Division of Gyeongsang Province, and in 1800, the year of King Sunjo's accession, he became Military Commander of Hwanghae Province. In 1808, the eighth year of King Sunjo, he was appointed Naval Commander of the Left Division of Jeolla Province, and he went on to serve as Commander of North Hamgyeong Province and as Naval Commander of Hwanghae Province, holding commander posts in several provinces and devoting himself to military affairs and defence. This stele was erected to commemorate the many achievements of An Suk, who took up the post of Left Naval Commander of Honam in 1809, the ninth year of King Sunjo: he repaired the walls of the government office; he made every effort to relieve the people who were suffering from drought; he restored the turtle ship (geobukseon) that had been stationed there, referring to plans from the time of Yi Sun-sin (Chungmugong); and he identified and corrected abuses in the grain-loan system. The stele, housed in a stele pavilion, has its body set on a square base and topped with a capstone; on the front of the body the title "Stele of the Achievements of Jeoldosa An Suk" is carved vertically. The inscription, cut in thirteen lines of about fifty characters each, was composed by Kim I-gak, who held the military rank of jeolchung, and written out by Jeong Jib-won, a yuhak (an unranked Confucian scholar); it records An Suk's career in detail. Erected in 1823, the 23rd year of King Sunjo, the inscription is valuable material not only for the social and institutional history of the late Joseon period but also for research into the Left Naval Base and local history.
