Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to commemorate Yu Suk and Kim Hong-uk. Yu Suk (1324–1368) was a Goryeo-period civil official who, for his merit in suppressing the Red Turban Rebellion, was enfeoffed as Lord of Seoryeong and given the title of First-Class Merit Subject; however, in the 14th year of King Gongmin (1365) he was strangled to death by Sin Don, who feared his loyalty and integrity. Kim Hong-uk (1602–1654) was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period who held various posts, including governor of Hwanghae-do. He met his death over remarks that angered King Hyojong, said to have left the words, 'Has there ever been a country that killed people over speech and did not fall?' This academy, built in the 45th year of King Sukjong (1719), received in the first year of King Gyeongjong (1721) a royal plaque inscribed 'Seongamseowon', making it a royally chartered academy. It was abolished in the 8th year of Emperor Gojong (1871) under Heungseon Daewongun's order closing seowon, but was rebuilt in 1924. Passing through the outer gate that serves as the main entrance, one finds the east and west dormitories facing each other, and a shrine enshrining the spirit tablets of Yu Suk and Kim Hong-uk. Ancestral rites are held at this academy every year in the second and eighth lunar months.
