In the 23rd year of King Yeongjo of Joseon (1747), at the vow of the Seon master Chaeeun, head monk of Bulgapsa Temple at the time, the monk Wonmun transcribed by hand the Gihae Yangan, a record of the temple's history and its rice-paddy land handed down since earlier times. It follows the standard format used for compiling Joseon-period land registers, and specifically records the names of those who took part in compiling the register; at the end, the Yeonggwang county magistrate's signature appears in his own hand. It was also compiled systematically by a single person within a single period, so that the entire text is in one person's handwriting. As the only surviving documentary material relating to Bulgapsa Temple, it is valued not only for what it reveals about the temple's history and financial circumstances, but also as a source for understanding one aspect of temple economies in the late Joseon period.
