Yeongil Gi Cheon Historic House
영일 기천고택 · 迎日 杞泉故宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is said to have been built by Yi Seung-un (1793–1861) and is presumed to date from sometime in the 1800s. Every other building in the village was destroyed by fire during the Korean War, but this house alone survived and remains standing today. Within a spacious yard enclosed by an earthen wall, the I-shaped (ㅡ-shaped) anchae, or main living quarters, faces south. To the east, in front of the anchae, stands an I-shaped sarangchae, the detached men's quarters used for receiving guests, so that the two buildings together form an L-shaped (ㄱ-shaped) layout. The anchae measures five and a half kan across the front and one kan in depth (a kan being the traditional unit of measurement between a building's pillars), while the sarangchae measures four kan across the front and one kan in depth. Both roofs are gable (matbae) roofs, which, seen from the side, take the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person).
