This Confucian academy was built to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Jeong Sin-bo, the founding ancestor of the Seosan Jeong clan. Jeong Sin-bo was originally a man of Song China; when his country fell, he fled to Goryeo and settled in Seosan. The academy was built in the 20th year of King Sukjong (1694), but was dismantled in the 8th year of Emperor Gojong (1871) under Heungseon Daewongun's order to close Confucian academies, before being restored in 1910 by Yu Yang-mok and other Confucian scholars. Within the grounds are a shrine where memorial rites are held for past sages, the east and west dormitories for students, and a gate. The shrine enshrines the spirit tablets of nine men in all: Jeong Sin-bo together with eight further Confucian scholars — Jeong In-gyeong, Yu Bang-taek, Yun Hwang, Yu Baek-yu, Yu Bak-sun, Yu Yun, Kim Jeok and Kim Wi-jae. The building has three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the Chinese character 八 (eight). The academy no longer performs its former role in local education, and today memorial rites are held only each February and August.
