Gangjin Wollam-ri Rock-carved Buddha Buldu Statue
강진월남리마애여래불두상 · 康津月南里磨崖如來佛頭像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gangjin Wollam-ri Rock-carved Buddha Buldu Statue stands at 'Chikdeokgol,' about 2.5 km from the three-story stone pagoda at the Wollamsa Temple Site (Treasure No. 298), south of Wolchulsan Mountain in Gangjin County, South Jeolla Province. On a rock face about 4 m high overall and up to about 6 m wide, only the Buddha's head is carved, in bold relief and facing east. The long, upward-slanting corners of the eyes, the long straight nose, and the somewhat realistically rendered mouth give some sense of the level of craftsmanship. Compared with the Wollamsa and Muwisa temple sites, which flourished in the Goryeo period, and with the Seated Rock-carved Buddha of Wolchulsan Mountain (National Treasure No. 144), located just over the ridge below Gujeongbong Peak, it provides material for studying the Buddhist sculpture of the period.
