No record survives of the history of Baegamsa Temple. However, tradition holds that the old Bowonsa Temple once had ninety-nine hermitages, and that after the hundredth, Baegamsa, was built, all the hermitages were destroyed by fire; this suggests that Bowonsa was founded and then lost during the early Goryeo period, when it was at its most prosperous. The site today preserves a temple precinct of about 2,000 pyeong, along with sections of a stone retaining wall thought to date from its construction. Parts of a stone lantern and a stone pagoda also remain, and their style and technique suggest they were made during the Goryeo period.
