Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMudeungam Hermitage, located at San 20-1, Sinwon-ri, Daap-myeon, Gwangyang, is a branch temple of Ssanggyesa Temple in Hadong, built in 1959 and thus a relatively recent foundation. It stands on the north-eastern slope of Buramsan Mountain, just before the Seomjin Bridge that crosses from Daap to Hadong. This Seated Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva was the first statue in South Jeolla Province from which sacred contents placed inside a Buddhist image — including a votive text, a dharani text for enshrining true relics, and a hoeryeongtong container — were found, revealing important details such as the precise date of the statue, the place for which it was made, the reason for its making, and its donors. The statue is in the style of the late Joseon period, but is distinctive in that its robe lacks the usual bandan form baring one shoulder, the upper edge of its skirt-like inner robe is straight without a tied waistband knot, and it displays the sanghyeonjwa style of drapery cascading over the pedestal; it stands 62 cm in total height. A bodhisattva statue of this form is rare not only in South Jeolla Province but across the whole of Korea, giving it important value.
