Baekwasanseong Fortress is a stone-walled fortress built on the summit of Mt. Baekwasan, the jinsan (guardian mountain) of Taean-gun, in a position that commands a sweeping view of the surrounding area and is well suited for defending against invaders. Judging from the construction technique of its walls and the artefacts excavated there, the fortress appears to have first been built in the late Baekje period, to have continued functioning as a mountain fortress with repairs to its walls through the Goryeo period, and to have been used from the Joseon period onward as a bongsudae, a beacon-fire station for relaying signals. Because a detailed survey of the walls inside the military compound has not been carried out, the exact circumference of the walls is not known, but a recent survey estimates the total circumference at 1,017 m. Today only the beacon-fire station, which once relayed signals to Mt. Bukjusan in Seosan and Mt. Dobisan in Buseok-myeon, and part of the walls remain. Excavation has confirmed that the fortress interior contains the remains of a well, gates, buildings and a chiseong, a projecting bastion built out from the wall for flanking defence.
