Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seated image of Yaksayeorae, the Buddha of Medicine, enshrined at Sinheungsa Temple in Gunnae-ri, Wando-eup, Wando-gun. The statue originally stood at Simjeokam Hermitage, affiliated with Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam; the monk Choui moved it to the present Daegwangmyeongjeon Hall, and it was later relocated and enshrined at Sinheungsa Temple by the monk Eungsong (Park Yeong-hui). According to a votive text found among the bokjang, the sacred objects placed inside the statue, the image was called the Seated Yaksayeorae, was first made in 1628, was repaired in 1802, was regilded in 1845, and was repaired and regilded again in 1865. The statue was made in 1628, a period when the production of Buddhist images was gradually reviving after the turmoil of the Japanese invasions of Korea, and its style can still be seen to carry on the tradition of the early Joseon period; it therefore serves as a standard for studying how this style changed into that of Buddhist statues of the late Joseon period, that is, the 18th to 19th centuries. As a Joseon-period Buddhist statue whose date of production is known, it is regarded as important material for research into the chronology of Buddhist statues.
