Goheung Sinhoridonghodeok Ancient Tomb

The tomb is located at the end of a low ridge that runs from the north-west to the south-east of Donghodeok Village; the ridge has been cleared for dry fields, and the alluvial land around it is farmed as paddy fields. At the end of the ridge are four commoner graves of the Yeonggwang Jeong clan, and the ancient tomb lies behind them. The mound has been somewhat altered by the clearing of the surrounding land and the construction of the later graves, but it is relatively well preserved. The mound has been considerably levelled, and the upper part of the stone chamber, which runs on a north–south long axis through the centre, is now completely exposed. The stone chamber is thought to be of the above-ground type, built on top of the old ground surface as the mound was heaped up, and was constructed on a north–south orientation regardless of the north-west to south-east slope of the terrain. In plan the mound is roughly circular, slightly longer on the north–south axis, measuring about 18 m north–south, 16 m east–west, and 2 m in height. According to local villagers, the tomb was looted during the Japanese colonial period, and even then the capstones of the stone chamber were already exposed. No surrounding features such as a perimeter ditch have been identified. All of the capstones of the stone chamber are exposed on the mound; five stone slabs were used to cover the burial chamber and the entrance passage, and part of the wall stones is exposed beneath them. The capstones are slabs about 30 cm thick. Adjoining the southernmost capstone stands a door stone 150 cm wide and 30 cm thick. The stone chamber was built by stacking stone slabs, with the entrance passage connected to the centre of the south wall of the burial chamber. The exact dimensions of the chamber are not known, but can be estimated to some degree from the wall stones revealed between the looters' pit and the capstones: the burial chamber measures about 7.2 m in length, 1.5 m in width and 1.2 m in height, and the entrance passage is about 1.3 m long and 0.55 m wide at the chamber end, widening to about 1 m at the entrance, giving the stone chamber an overall length of around 8.5 m.
