Goheung Yamangniyamak Ancient Tomb
고흥야막리야막고분 · 高興野幕里野幕古墳

This ancient tomb sits atop a hill about 30 metres above sea level, to the north of Yamak Village, which lies toward the south-western end of the Goheung Peninsula. The hills to the east of the village, roughly 100 metres above sea level, fall steeply to about 50 metres, then level off into a gentle slope between 30 and 40 metres, an area now farmed as fields; the tomb stands within this zone. In front of the tomb the ground again drops sharply to a flat area at around 15 metres above sea level, so the tomb occupies a spot that commands a fine view of its surroundings. The tomb has been considerably damaged as the surrounding area was reclaimed for farmland and a private grave was built to its north-west. The mound is slightly elongated from north-west to south-east, following the line of the ridge, and in plan is close to a rectangle with rounded corners. However, while the north-western and south-western slopes have similar gradients, the north-eastern and south-western sides fall steeply toward the base of the mound; this suggests that the mound was originally circular, and that its present shape resulted from the side slopes of the ridge being heavily cut away as the surrounding land was reclaimed. The surviving mound measures about 20 metres from north-west to south-east, about 15 metres from north-east to south-west, and about 2 metres high; it is presumed to have originally been a round mound roughly 20 metres in diameter.
