Damyang Changpyeong-ri Ancient Tomb
담양창평리고분 · 潭陽昌平里古墳

Changpyeong-myeon lies in the south-eastern part of Damyang county, forming a basin-like landform created as a tributary of the Jeungamcheon stream rises toward the east. The southern half of Changpyeong-myeon is ringed by mountains 300–450m above sea level, while the northern half consists of hills around 200m above sea level; the Jeungamcheon flows eastward through a narrow gorge and continues into Goseo-myeon. At the centre of Changpyeong-myeon, relatively young alluvial land has formed along the stream, and the tomb lies in a paddy field about 100m from the stream, to the east of Changpyeong High School. Because the surrounding area is farmed as paddy fields and the western side was cut away when Changpyeong High School was built, it is difficult to determine the tomb's original topographical setting, but it can be inferred to some extent from the surrounding landform. Ori Village lies on a low rise descending from Jusan Mountain (224m above sea level), and this low rise continues to Bobyeong Village to the south-west. Since the tomb lies in the paddy field between the two villages, it is presumed to have been built on the ridge of an alluvial natural levee formed along the Jeungamcheon. Local residents call it 'Josan', and there is a collapsed pit at its summit. On the west side a farm road has cut away the end of the mound, and on the east an irrigation channel runs along the tomb's edge. The mound is circular in plan, with a slight projection to the south, though it is not known whether this is related to the tomb. The tomb measures about 15m in north–south diameter, 14m in east–west diameter and about 3m high; given that the western side has been destroyed, it is presumed to have originally been a round mound about 15m in diameter. About 100m east of this tomb, beside a stone-materials factory, another mound about 10m across has been identified, which is also presumed to be a tomb.
