This academy was built to honour Kim Suk-ja, Kim Chwi-seong and Park Un. Kim Suk-ja was a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period who inherited the teachings of Gil Jae; after holding a series of official posts he retired to Miryang, where he devoted himself to training the next generation of scholars. Kim Chwi-seong studied under Park Yeong and was repeatedly nominated for the post of chambong, a minor court office, but is said to have had no ambition for official rank. Park Un, son of Wonjong, passed the jinsa examination, a licentiate degree, in the 14th year of King Jungjong's reign (1519). The academy later also enshrined Go Eung-cheok and Kim Chwi-mun, who was respected as one of the three most incorruptible officials of King Myeongjong's reign (1545–1567), bringing the number of memorial tablets housed here to five. Built in the 25th year of King Injo's reign (1647), the academy received a name plaque reading "Nakbong" from the state in the 11th year of King Jeongjo's reign (1787), making it a sa'aek seowon, an academy granted a royal charter and name plaque. It was abolished under Heungseon Daewongun's order to close Confucian academies, then restored by local Confucian scholars in 1931. Built on a sloping hill behind the village, the academy comprises the main buildings Jibuidang and Sangdeokmyo, the inner and outer three-bay gates (naesammun and oesammun) that serve as its entrances, and the east and west dormitories (dongjae and seojae) used as lodgings. Jibuidang, the lecture hall, is four bays wide and two bays deep; its central two bays form a wooden-floored hall flanked by heated ondol rooms. Sangdeokmyo, which houses the five memorial tablets, is a modest building three bays wide and two bays deep. The academy no longer serves an educational function, but a memorial rite is held here every March.
