Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of Eo Yeon (1345–1429), a civil official of the early Joseon period, his wife of the Lee clan of Haman, and their son Eo Byeon-gap (1380–1435). Eo Yeon became a judge of Chungju in 1409, the ninth year of King Taejong, and later served as magistrate of Daegu; he died in 1429, the eleventh year of King Sejong, at the age of 84. Eo Byeon-gap placed first in the civil service examination in 1408, the eighth year of King Taejong. In 1420, the second year of King Sejong, when the Jiphyeonjeon (Hall of Worthies) was newly established, he served there as an eungyo (reader), and also held the posts of left reader of the Crown Prince Tutorial Office and acting recorder of the Office of Spring and Autumn Annals, taking part in the compilation of the Veritable Records of King Taejong. In 1424, the sixth year of King Sejong, he rose to deputy director of the Jiphyeonjeon. He died in 1435, the seventeenth year of King Sejong, at the age of 55, after which he was posthumously elevated to Jaheondaebu, Minister of War and concurrently director of the State Tribunal. In the burial ground today, the graves of Eo Yeon and his wife of the Lee clan of Haman lie side by side, while Eo Byeon-gap and his wife of the Seong clan of Changnyeong share a single grave. Eo Byeon-gap's grave is unusual in that the base of its mound is enclosed by a rectangular arrangement of stones.
