Muan Gojeol-ri Tomb stands on a hill about 35m above sea level, on the north-western slope of a ridge descending from north-east to south-west. Numerous later folk graves occupy the mound, spread across its flat summit and its north-western, south-western and south-eastern slopes; the edge of the south-eastern slope also has some deeply cut sections. Except along its south-eastern side, the edges of the mound and the area corresponding to its perimeter ditch appear to have been considerably cut away, and the mound has been partly altered by the later graves built on it, but overall it remains well preserved. In plan the mound is square, with its axis running north-east to south-west. Each side measures about 38m, and since the tomb sits on a slope its height varies by location, but is estimated at about 5m when measured from the centre of the mound. A trial excavation of the surrounding area by Mokpo National University Museum confirmed a perimeter ditch 6.1m wide and 0.73m deep, with a cross-section close to a U shape.
