Je Mal Tomb, Changwon
창원 제말 묘 · 昌原 諸沫 墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of General Je Mal of Gagye (d. 1593), a leader of righteous armies (uibyeong) in the mid-Joseon period. When the Japanese invasions of Korea broke out in 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, he raised a righteous army and won great victories at Ungcheon, Gimhae, Mungyeong and elsewhere, becoming Magistrate of Seongju in 1593, the 26th year of King Seonjo. He died in battle that same year while fighting Japanese forces at Seongju. Because he moved as swiftly as if flying, he was known as "General Bi" (飛, "flying"), and it is said that even Japanese troops feared him and avoided fighting him. In 1792, the 16th year of King Jeongjo, the state posthumously raised his rank to Minister of War; because he and his nephew Hong Rok had both served the country with loyalty, the king ordered Minister of Personnel Seo Yu-rin to compose an inscription for a "twin loyalty" stele, and twin loyalty pavilions were erected at Seongju and Jinju. Today a gravestone stands before the tomb, and memorial rites are held for him at Chungjeolsa Shrine in Seongju and Ungok Seowon in Goseong.
