Yeongam Namsallimabong Peak Ancient Tomb
영암남산리마봉고분 · 靈巖南山里馬峰古墳

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Mabong Tomb lies on the northern side of the Wolchulsan Mountain range, south of Miam-myeon. The mountain range descends steeply to about 50 m above sea level, below which it levels out into gentle hills. The tomb sits on the ridge at the end of a hill descending from south to north, and a village occupies the hill's eastern slope. The tomb lies behind the house of a Mr Choi Jong-yul; on its east and south sides, where the house now stands, the edge of the mound has been heavily cut away. The mound has been considerably damaged by the construction of a makeshift building, storage sheds and a water tank, and various fruit trees, including persimmon trees, have been planted on it. At the top of the mound is a sunken depression about 3 m in diameter and 0.7 m deep, which local residents say was dug as a bunker for protection against communist forces during the Korean War (the June 25th War). Beside a tree standing at the summit is a stone monument whose inscription has worn away. The mound is circular in plan and currently measures 27 m in diameter and 5 m high, though it is thought to have originally been about 25 m in diameter. On the south-western side of the mound, a section believed to be the entrance to the stone burial chamber is exposed, suggesting that the chamber began to be built from slightly above the original ground level.
